Youth Advisory Council: 2006 Grants

The Youth Advisory Council of the Hamilton Community Foundation ran a very successful conference, Living the Environment in October 2005 to introduce high school students to their Protecting Our Environment Together (POET) Youth grants program. Twenty-seven schools, out of a possible 28, attended the event at Mohawk College with two students and one teacher each.

Jennifer Correiro, a remarkable young woman who started Taking It Global, gave the keynote address highlighting the benefits of youth being involved in their communities and motivating the students to be part of what is happening in their surroundings.

Students chose two out of eight workshops presented by local environmental experts and gathered ideas and resource material for projects in their neighbourhoods or schools.

The conference culminated in the distribution of grant application kits.

Twenty-one applications for student-based projects was approved, and a total of $13,260 was granted to area high schools.
