Teens in Philanthropy: 2004 Grants
In November 2004 the Teens in Philanthropy group had an opportunity once again to give out grants across Charlotte County. We chose our mandate for these grants to benefit youth of all ages in Charlotte County, New Brunswick.
We have been given many opportunities to ensure our money goes to a well deserving place. We met with Chandra Leavitt, Director of Healthy Learners, at N.B. School District 10 to get a sense of the diversity of youth issues around the county. We then decided that the best way for us to reach Charlotte County Youth would be through the network of schools that exist in our region.
Grand Manan Community School
Grand Manan Car Club
$500
In this program, the students learn how to work and communicate as a team. Best of all, the project gives the teens something to do! This is one of the only programs on the island that does not revolve around athleticism and gives the students who are interested in automotives a chance to show their skills.
Pennfield Elementary School
Outdoor Activity Center
$1,050
This school wanted to bring in picnic tables, shrubbery, grass and flowers to their grounds. The students would be able to take classes outside on nice days, get some air, and learn more about their environment. What a great way to learn.
Sir James Dunn Academy
Mural project
$1,000
We made the decision to grant this because we thought it brightened up the school and it gave all students a chance to create more school spirit. The supplies are also going to be used for the school musical that is taking place in the spring and the school’s art programs.
St. Stephen Middle School
Outdoor skating rink
$1,000
The rink, which is to be built on an unused small lot belonging to the school, is for the public and will be maintained by the students. We understand that St. Stephen is a hockey town, and for some youth the public skating fees for the arena pose a problem. The rink is going to be used for after-school activities as well as Phys Ed classes, so we know that it will benefit youth from the whole area.
Dragonfly Project
Day camp
$2,000
We decided to fund this project even though there was no formal grant application from them. When we all heard about this organization, we felt it was amazing - and it fit our mandate! We all have had experience in the school system with autistic children, and we see how little there is for them. A two-week long day camp will allow all of these kids to express themselves and not have to be “tolerated” like they are in school. This project will give children with autism the chance to be themselves.
St. George Elementary School
Fence project
$450
St. George Elementary School has been making renovations and improvements to their soccer fields, which were badly in need of repair. A new fence was also required, for which they had to raise additional funds. The fields will be used by the school during the school year, but also all summer by the St. Croix Minor Soccer Program, benefiting hundreds of children all around the district. Physical activity is very important for children and soccer is inexpensive and fun way to get it. It also promotes life long skills.
