YACOS: 2004 Grants

In 2003-04 YACOS supported two Youth projects in the Shuswap: improvements to the Salmon Arm Storefront School Park, located in the Education Centre beside the former JL Jackson site, and grant to the Shuswap Development Rugby Club to support the growth of rugby in the Shuswap by building a pool of competent coaches and referees.

Here is an overview of the park enhancement project:

The Salmon Arm Storefront School Park, located in the Education Centre beside the former JL Jackson site, will see more improvements thanks to a $1,000 grant from YACOS.

The cheque was presented to School staff by YACOS members Paige Hilland, Kim Shuert and Cheryl Long, July 7.

YACOS (Youth Advisory Committee of the Shuswap) is the youth component of the Shuswap Community Foundation. They were impressed with Park improvements to date which include a gazebo, pathways, raised beds for vegetables and flowers plus bark mulch for the garden area and an underground watering system for the beds.

The School's future plans include: the placement of two or three concrete picnic tables on concrete slabs, an Alan block retaining wall between the parking area and the Park along with fill to level the parking area behind the retaining wall and, finally, a flower beds of perennial and flowing shrubs.

The Education Centre Park will be used by students and the neighbouring community. Spokesmen say this project provides an opportunity for students to learn applied skills. Some 15 to 20 students, under 19 years, are expected to take part in this project over the next two years.
