Calgary Youth Foundation: 2008 Grants

$1750 - Youth Volunteer Corps Steering Committee - Spring into Action

The Youth Volunteer Corps is planning Spring into Action for Global Youth Service Day. On April 26th - April 27th the YVC Steering Committee will be hosting six to eight different soccer events in various low-income communities throughout Calgary. In addition to soccer related activities, each community event will be open to families and may include music, food, and other games. The purpose of Spring into Action is to promote awareness of the importance of health, wellness and physical activity in young people. The Youth Foundation grant will support the cost of water bottles for those children who participate in the soccer events.

$948.50 - TB Riley Grade 9 Leadership Council - Empty Bowls

The students at TB Riley will participate in ceramic bowl making at their school for the Empty Bowls event. The Calgary Empty Bowls event is a youth run, youth driven project. Throughout the months of February to April, volunteers of all ages create beautiful ceramic bowls at the Wildflower Arts Centre. Then in May, the Steering Committee holds a mock-soup kitchen event. Individuals in the community purchase a ticket to the event for fifteen dollars. At the end of the evening the guest takes home his/her bowl as a reminder of youth that go hungry in the city.

TB Riley is holding an Empty Bowls soup kitchen of their own during Youth Week. Youth involved will gain a better understanding of youth homelessness while creating a sense of community within their school.

$750 - Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta, Picture This Social Skills Program
"Picture This" focuses on teaching social skills to youth with learning disabilities and allowing them to implement these new skills by writing, directing, acting in and producing short amateur films. The film that is created by the twelve youth is entered into the Disabilities Film Festival, which raises awareness around learning disabilities. The Youth Foundation grant will support the cost of props, costuming, and sets for the project.

$1750 - Change Hurtful Attitudes Now Generate Equality (CHANGE) Project, Lord

Beaverbrook High School

CHANGE is a daylong event that promotes equality and decreases discrimination in our school and community. The initial idea came from one student, who developed the event which occurred on March 13th, with all 2000 students at Lord Beaverbrook attending. Presentations and seminars were given by a variety of community members to understand the impact of societal prejudices. The Calgary Board of Education is interested in replicating the CHANGE project in other schools and the school is already planning to make CHANGE an annual event.

Calgary Youth Foundation: 2007 Grants

Youth Volunteer Corps Steering Committee - $2,000

Clean Up, Fix Up, Wrap Up

The Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) Steering Committee is involved in planning Global Youth Service Day 2007, for which the theme is "Clean Up, Fix Up, Wrap Up". They have partnered with Hull Child and Family Services to 'Fix Up' youth group homes in Calgary on April 21-22, 2007. Volunteers will help improve and create special rooms in the homes, such as a self soothing relaxation room, a games room, a library, and an outdoor garden. The YVC Steering Committee will use this grant to purchase paint, rugs, curtains, fabric, soil, and other necessary supplies to 'Fix Up' the youth group homes.

Beauty & Brains Conference - $2,000

The Beauty & Brains Conference is a one-day conference aiming to expose young women (ages 12-17) in Calgary to the variety of career opportunities that are available to them, specifically in non-traditional careers. The event will be held in early November 2007 at the Telus World of Science and will include guest speakers, demonstrations, field-specific sessions, and displays. The project aims to help young women expand their future horizons. The grant will support the venue, promotional, food, and recognition expenses of the event.

JunoBeach Academy - $400

JunoBeach AcademyGreen Team

The Juno Beach Academy (JBA) Green Team hopes to institute a school wide recycling program. The students from the JBA leadership classes will collect and sort all of the recyclable materials, which will then be placed into the large bins for pick up by a private recycling company. In addition, JBA students hope to expand their project to Central Memorial High School. This grant will support the cost of the recycling bins, along with the pick up cost as well.

Sir Winston Churchill Volunteer for the Environment Club - $1,100

Recycling Program

Sir Winston Churchill Volunteer for the Environment Club will institute a school wide paper recycling program. Although the Club used to recycle paper, the company that was picking up their items started charging. This grant will reinstate the paper recycling program, providing funds for both the cost of the bins and the pick up of the items.

Youth Week - $2,000

Passport Project

During Youth Week, youth minded agencies and businesses celebrate youth by organizing and hosting an array of special events for young people. These events can be recreational or educational, ranging from discussion groups and job fairs to volunteer projects, job teen nights, and more. The Passports will create awareness about all of the events happening during Youth Week and be used for a contest as well. This grant will help produce Youth Week Passports, one of the main marketing tools used for Youth Week.

Ernest Manning Youth Volunteer Corps Clubs - $300

Silent Auction Benefiting Inspire Africa

The Ernest Manning YVC Club plans to hold a silent auction evening in a community hall near their school. At this event there will be entertainment, food, and a silent auction. The event will raise awareness and funds for Inspire Africa, an organization working towards building a girl's school in post genocide Rwanda. The grant will support the community hall rental for the evening.

TOTAL: $7,800 (over granting has occurred as a result of unused funds).

Calgary Youth Foundation: 2006 Grants

In February 2006 the Calgary Youth Foundation completed their second granting cycle of the year. We once again followed our mandate of granting to projects that have a positive impact on youth in Calgary and the surrounding area. The Youth Foundation supported the following youth initiated or youth beneficial projects:

Bert Church High School TEAM Leadership - $600
Hunt for the Needy

The students of the Bert Church TEAM Leadership group will be conducting a scavenger hunt to collect items for the following organizations: Boys and Girls Club, Airdrie Family Services, Animal Rescue Foundation, Airdrie Food Bank, Bethany Care Centre, North Rockyview Community Resource Centre, and the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation. The scavenger hunt will be run in the four Airdrie middle schools by the TEAM Leadership group. Funding is being provided to transfer the collected items to the respective organizations.

Bishop O'Byrne High School TEAM Leadership - $1,000
Silent Auction Penny Carnival

The TEAM Leadership students at Bishop O’Byrne High School are working with students from three other elementary schools who were involved with the Health in Perspective program to plan a Silent Auction Penny Carnival. The purpose of the event is to bring the community together by fundraising for an important cause and allow youth in high school and elementary to build on their leadership skills. Funding is being provided to buy a number of supplies to run the carnival.

Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta - Calgary Chapter (LDAA-CC) - $720
Life Skills 101

The LDAA-CC is organizing their first Life Skills 101, a spring break workshop series designed for youth with learning disabilities. There will be a day-long workshop on each of the following topics: Calgary Transit, Banking & Budgeting, Resume Building & Job Options, Career Planning, and Driver Training. Funding is being provided to run one of the workshops.

Western Canada High School Amnesty Club - $700
Lend a Hand Campaign
The Amnesty Club of Western Canada High School is a student led and initiated club, whose mandate is to raise awareness and affect change through campaigns and fundraisers for issues concerning human rights and equal treatment. The members of this group will be creating a mural with handprints from the students from the school to make a statement about their stand against racism and bullying. Funding is being provided to buy painting and cleaning supplies, as well as a commemorative plaque and unveiling ceremony.

Edgemont 193 Venture Company - $350
West Coast Trail Super Trip 2006

The Edgemont 193 Venture Company will be hiking the West Coast Trail in the summer of 2006. The trip consists of a coastal hike of 75km for a total of 10-12 days and 9-11 nights of backpacking. Funding will be provided to supplement the costs of flying to Vancouver island as well as costs associated with the hike itself.

St. Mary's High School - $1,650

A Tuba Christmas

A Tuba Christmas is an event that originated in New York at Rockefeller Plaza. Every Christmas season tuba and euphonium players gather to pay respect to Mr. Bell, a tubist teacher for whom the project originated. This project will bring A Tuba Christmas to Calgary at Olympic Plaza for the first time ever. All proceeds and donations earned will go towards the St. Mary's Senior High School music program, to those who cannot afford lessons or to participate in the music program.

Sir Winston Churchill Youth Volunteer Corps Club - $1,000

Cards for a Cure

Cards for a Cure began as a project of the Sir Winston Churchill Youth Volunteer Corps Club who would meet once a week during their lunch hour. Students took materials and ran with their imaginations to create one of a kind, hand made cards. The purpose of the Cards for the Cure project is to raise funds from the selling of cards, and then donating the money to help fight aids in Africa. The YVC club will use this grant to cover the costs of the card supplies so that they can donate all of the funds to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa through the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Simon Fraser Junior High Youth Volunteer Corps Club - $500

Mission for Kenya

The Simon Fraser Junior High Youth Volunteer Corps Club's Mission for Kenya project intends to help children in the Motherly Care Orphanage in Kenya by selling calendars. The calendar will contain photographs from the orphanage, taken by the volunteer club adult coordinator. Proceeds from the calendar's sale will go directly to the Motherly Care Orphanage in Kenya.

Teams4Teens for the Calgary Boys and Girls Club - $1,000

Teams4Teens

Teams4Teens gives homeless teens in Calgary the opportunity to receive a backpack filled with essential items. Teams4Teens will work with sports teams in Calgary to receive gently used backpacks, each will then be filled with various necessities (toothbrushes, bus tickets, etc) from a list of items. These backpacks will be distributed through the Boys and Girls Club to street youth in Calgary. Funding is being provided to supply sleeping bags in addition to these backpacks.
