Beautiful Plains Community Foundation Inc. (Manitoba)

Youth Advisory Committee: 2004 Grants

The YAC associated with the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation is in its third year at Neepawa Collegiate in Neepawa, MB. They have given out $5,000 in grants in total. Grants from 2004 include:

Neepawa Public Library
Teen/youth books
$450

The great part about this grant was that the head librarian, Lynda Giannotti, took members of the YAC to Winnipeg (two hours away) to pick out the books. They made a day of it in July 2004. The kids had a great time and the library acquired new books for its younger readers.

Neepawa Palliative Care
Family room refreshment budget
$500

The following is a quote from Arlene Guilbert, a volunteer from the Neepawa Palliative Care facility:

I was very pleased to have two students come and interview me in the family room of the hospital. So often there is no knowledge of the Palliative Care program until it is needed.

In the fall of 2004 we were very pleased to open a family room [at the facility]. Now we have two rooms to supply nourishment for families. These rooms and the supplies in them provide an oasis of serenity in the midst of grief. For a short while, families can go and relax, have a drink and a snack in a peaceful environment.

As of November 2004 we have provided nourishment to 40 families. The Youth Advisory Committee grant gives us money to purchase food and drink. Many thanks.
