Youth Engagement Fund (BC)

Canada Volunteerism Initiative BC Network and BC Community Foundation YACs Partner to Promote Volunteerism to Youth

Community foundation youth advisory councils (YACs) are in a good position to promote volunteerism to other youth. In fact, they already do, through many of the grants that they make to projects that are led by or engage young people.

Some YACs are also involved in community leadership activities, such as providing grant writing or project planning workshops to other youth organizations, or surveying non-profit groups to create an inventory of volunteer positions relevant to youth.

And YAC members, by being such terrific volunteers themselves, set a great example and can encourage their peers by talking about their own experiences and the benefits of volunteering.

But whether a YAC has experience in such activities, or is brand new and just getting started, the Canada Volunteerism Initiative's Youth Engagement Fund is a great way for YACs in BC to really get moving on getting the word out to other youth about volunteering! And as a side benefit, YACs will probably raise their profile in their community, and may even get some new members.

The Youth Engagement Fund is a partnership between BC Community Foundation Youth Advisory Councils and the Canada Volunteerism Initiative BC Network. Its aim is to promote volunteerism to youth, as well as raise awareness of and participation in Global Youth Service Day. Through Community Engagement Fund grants of $500, YACs can undertake a special project designed to inspire and assist other young people to volunteer.

Sample YAC projects:
  • West Vancouver Community Foundation's YAHU (Young Adults Helping U), planned to run a volunteer fair in the secondary schools in West Vancouver. The purpose of this event is to expose youth to the many different organizations that are in need of volunteers in the community.
  • Kamloops Foundation's Youth Advisory Council's mural project fuses youth volunteerism with city beautification.
  • Squamish Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Council had plans to organize a presentation of the "Kindness Crew", an energetic group of four young men who travelled across Canada promoting volunteerism and acts of kindness. Local non-profits were also to be invited to display information about volunteer opportunities for youth.
