Youth Leadership Institute resources
Background on the Youth Leadership Institute
The resources in this section are from The Youth Leadership Institute in California and will be a valuable addition to every YAC's toolkit. They can assist community foundation youth advisory councils and the youth organizations they work with in supporting or developing solid, sustainable programs. Below is some background directly from YLI on their approach:
"The Youth Leadership Institute builds communities where young people and their adult allies come together to create positive social change. We design and implement community-based programs that provide youth with leadership skills in the areas of drug and alcohol abuse prevention, philanthropy, and civic engagement. Building on these real-world program experiences, the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) creates curricula and training programs that enable us to foster social change efforts across the nation, all while promoting best practices in the field of youth development.
"YLI's youth philanthropy programs and training have empowered thousands of young people who have positively changed their own lives and communities through grantmaking. YLI envisions youth philanthropy as an approach for greater youth participation in communities and institutions. Far more than just a means for young people to learn and practice giving time and money, it is a way to foster real inquiry into the needs and concerns of youth, and give young people important tools for action. In our youth philanthropy approach, young grantmakers are challenged to devise guidelines that fit with real youth priorities and needs.
"As importantly, we encourage grantseekers to deepen this investigation of community needs, their underlying causes, and demonstrate how their proposed projects help address them these causes. Because we believe that foundations are important community institutions, we are also working to increase opportunities for meaningful youth engagement in foundation grantmaking and policy decisions. For more information about YLI, visit our website at www.yli.org, or contact Matt Rosen at 415.455.1676 or mrosen@yli.org."
